In this week’s blog post, we explore some top tips for studying GCSE level languages. Whilst languages can seem particularly daunting, especially if you haven’t enjoyed them in the past, we can help you to find some fun ways to revise, helping you to succeed in your studies!

Firstly, as with all subjects, our number one revision tip is to use past papers and practice questions! Don’t forget to practice listening plenty too, as this is a big part of the final assessment, and the only way to get better at this is to do it more! Try not to feel discouraged if you struggle with the first few attempts, you can listen to the past paper recording as many times as you want to, and you should definitely try reading the transcript at the same time as listening.

Make sure you also practice speaking and writing. This is where a study buddy can come in really useful. Particularly with speaking it is important that you get feedback, so try to find someone at your school that you can pair up with. You can exchange writing that you have done in your chosen language, and not only will you help each other, but it will also give you even more material at an accessible level to read. Try to point out each other’s grammar and pronunciation mistakes, and with time you will both improve!

Finally, we also recommend that you try using resources outside of the classroom, that interest you. Whether it’s watching your favourite TV show in another language (put the subtitles in your target language as well), reading a book you like or even just scrolling through social media, any additional exposure that you can give yourself to that second language is absolutely key in being familiar with it by the time it comes to the exam.
