Our teaching plans are tailored to each individual student, and have provided many students with the additional support they needed in order to secure the best possible exam results.
Firstly, do plenty of questions! Understanding the theory and knowing your formulae is only one small part of maths, the number one most important step you should take, is doing as many practice questions as you can. Maths is a very practical subject, so it’s important that you are actively working with the material and applying your formulae to problems. Even at KS3, it is really important to do as many questions as you can.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes you just need a concept explained to you a different way, it is okay to ask your teacher (or one of our tutors) to explain something again but from a slightly different perspective. You can also ask for more examples; seeing as many examples as possible will ensure that by the time it comes to your exam, you are familiar with all the different question types. For our 11+ students, this also applies to verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Take a break! Sometimes we just need to leave our brain to process the information overnight or often even taking just 20mins to go for a walk, will give you enough time to think through a new idea. Try and do a few practice questions before you take a break though, often concepts seem abstract and confusing in maths but when you apply them to a few questions, it can be easier than you thought!
Little and often! It’s really important, once you’ve understood something to keep doing questions throughout the school year from that topic, this will keep in fresh in your mind and mean that when it comes time to start revising you already have a lot of the work done!
Good luck and be kind to yourself! One bad test result isn’t the end of the world, and as you learn new concepts make sure you reward all your hard work, it’s important to try and enjoy the subject as well as putting in the work. Remember, our team of expert tutors is always here to help with any questions you might have, so make sure to contact us with any questions that you might have.
