Pancake Day – 5th March
What is Pancake Day?
Falling this year on the 5th March, Pancake Day is a traditional feast that is commonly celebrated in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and the United States. Other countries, such as the Philippines and Germany, can also be found celebrating.
Also known as Pancake Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday (which translates to Mardi Gras in French – the famous carnival celebration of New Orleans), this day is derived from Christian tradition. Many years ago, on the day before Ash Wednesday, people would eat all the rich foods they had leftover so as not to let them go to waste. This would be the last day of feasting before the Lent begins – a period that involves the disciplines of abstinence and fasting. Hence, on Shrove Tuesday, it became a tradition down many years to eat lots of pancakes, having the day eventually be called Pancake Day.

- 2 large eggs, lightly whisked
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- A pinch of salt
- Vegetable oil for frying
Step by Step:
Mix Ingredients
Put the flour in a large bowl with a pinch of salt, make a well in the centre, pour in the milk and eggs, then whisk until you have a smooth batter. Add the vegetable oil and whisk again.
Prepare the Frying Pan
Take a large frying pan and carefully wipe the inside of the pan with some kitchen roll dipped in vegetable oil.
Heat the Oil
With a grown-up’s help heat the pan over a medium heat for about a minute, then add just under a ladle-full of batter to the pan and immediately start swirling it around to get a nice even layer.
Time to Cook
Cook the pancake for about 30 seconds then use a palette knife or spatula to lift the pancake carefully and check that it’s golden-brown before turning over. Cook the other side for around 30 seconds and your delicious pancake is ready!
