How to Make Students Love Learning

Students exploring ways to learn

Students sometimes find it difficult to pay attention to subjects they do not enjoy. As a result, they will be reluctant to give themselves the space and opportunity to learn due to their lack of interest.

This is where adults must make it their duty to address education to their children and students in a way that is enticing. But how can we make learning fun?

Appeal to their creative side

The early years of a child’s development, is when it is at its prime of learning. Their creative energy and power of thought is most heightened when they are young. At this age, they have the drive to collect more knowledge and information. Therefore, it is important to appeal to their creative side and induce a fun and active way of learning. Forms of arts are collected and stored in our brains that allows us to remember them for a long time, if not for the rest of our lives. Thus, inducing manners of learning through arts like pictures (colourful graphs, charts or just images), songs or even dance are excellent learning tactics for students.

Make it personal

We can make education more desirable among students by making it seem personal to students’ lives. For example, asking them the kinds of stories they enjoy reading, and recommending books that appeal to their interests or hobbies. This way, you grab the attention of the student(s) through a sense of familiarity. Generally, people – let alone children – are more willing to pay attention in subjects they are already knowledgeable in. Therefore, appealing to them through familiarity or interest, is a fantastic way of attracting their attention.

Keep the interest high

Students generally think of studying in one way: school, staying still and quiet to pay attention and the worst part – homework. In an active child’s mind, this becomes very boring, very fast. It will quickly begin to feel like work that they do not enjoy and, soon enough, they will lose interest.

The important question that teachers, tutors and parents must ask themselves is: How do we keep them interested and make them want to learn on their own?

Well, there are various ways to attract interest in education, and it can vary from person to person. One fool proof way is to get students to participate in teaching themselves. Encouraging them to ask questions will trigger their interest; allowing them to dig into their minds and weave their way around understanding the subject.

Asking students what they think, helps them voice their thoughts and encourages them to think harder to reach a solution. Assisting them to get to that stage independently, will not only allow them to challenge themselves further, but also helps them to remember everything they learn. This is because the information was emitted primarily from within themselves, rather than from an outside source.

Encourage mistakes

Above all manners of learning, a vital form of education among students is to encourage mistakes. Allow them to persistently work their brains and make many wrong stops along the way. This tactic will give them a great boost of confidence and self-esteem, making it easier for them to learn and not be afraid of being wrong. Understanding why something is incorrect is a more efficient way of learning and comprehending, than knowing what is correct.
